financial services uk

Head to head with Sumant Bhatia, editor of the new Telegraph TV.

You’ve been a journalist for a lot of years, what are the biggest changes in personal finance that you have witnessed since you started?
A trend towards more complex products, and a greater awareness of global opportunities.

What (in financial services or personal finance) has changed for the better and what has changed for the worse?
A lower inflation world (until now at least) has meant lower returns, leading to financial institutions (from hedge funds to banks) taking more risks.

Head to head with Sumant Bhatia, editor of the new Telegraph TV.

Which story that you have broken are you most proud of?
I broke on the BBC last year that the Tesco Bomb threat was an attempted blackmail plot, and not a terrorist threat.

How is the ‘Your Money, Their Hands’ Telegraph TV programme going?
It’s going well. We’re promoting the channel more in the paper, and  on the new finance web page. It’s a niche programme getting good hits. And everyone who clicks onto the page is interested in the subject matter!

What topics are most suitable for Telegraph TV?
Show me something interesting we don’t know, and it may work on TV. For ‘Your Money, Their Hands’, we need successful fund or asset managers who have some interesting advice for investors which they can’t get elsewhere. The art of giving a 20-30 second soundbite helps, so some media training is useful.

Are you enjoying presenting your stories in this format, and what benefits do you think the format brings to your readers/viewers?
As regards ‘Your Money, Their Hands’, viewers get to see and hear the interviewee only - apart from the introduction and summary. It makes the interviewee the star.

Who do you think are your biggest competitors in this new space you are operating in?
The other newspapers plus the traditional broadcasters such as the BBC, although ‘Your Money, Their Hands’ is quite unique.

When is the best time to talk to Telegraph TV about an upcoming story?
Any time is a good time to pitch people for ‘Your Money, Their Hands’, send emails to: Robert Miller or Sumant Bhatia.

Do people have to come to your studio or can the filming be done remotely?
Nine times out of ten we go to the client or a neutral venue, such as the Science or Natural History Museum.

I know it's early days but how many people watch the reports so far?
It’s top secret, but companies will be happy with the exposure!
What keeps you awake at night?

What is your favourite book?
Changes frequently, but to understand online tv, the best book is perhaps The Long Tail.

What are your financial predictions for the year ahead?
More storms ahead, but sooner or later must be a good time to invest.
